Ipex 2014...

Not bad at all. The two large halls are mostly full of exhibitors and attendees. Very international in attendees. Puts the Chicago show to shame.
Any vendor that thinks tradeshows are not worth the effort and cost are seriously missing a great opportunity.
BTW, I was really impressed by what Scodix was showing in their booth.
No toilets on the main exhibition level...glad I'm not in a wheelchair.
Coffee in bleh.
Met up with Andy Cave of Auraia DM screening fame. This guy has a real passion for print. If you're thinking of FM (and you should) you owe it to your bottom line to check his solution.
A bottle of California plonk is cheaper here than back home in Canaduh and it's being sold in the very Muslim area where my hotel is located - just a $30 cab ride from the show. Cheaper than the meter said I should pay because I paid cash.
TV here is as bad as back home. Glad I cut the cord.
Waze seems to work here so I'll be able to use my iPad as a GPS wayfinder. So does the TextMe iPad app so I can phone home, yeah!

Question on Epson 7900WT Printer

Hi, I just purchased the metallic silver proofing paper for this printer and the instructions say to select "MetallicProof" as the paper type in the paper setup menu on the printer. Well... there is no option for this. I contacted Epson and they were no help. Any ideas? It says the firmware is up to date. I wanted to print the FlexRip color charts and read them in to make a proofer profile and I don't want to set it up using the wrong paper setting. Thanks in advance!

Automation Engine Transition

Hi Everyone!
I work for a folding carton company.
I am working on making the move from Nexus 10.1 to Automation Engine. We are having many issues with large complex files stalling in the Nexus Rip or erroring out for various reasons.
Can anyone who is currently using AE send me concrete reasons to be in favor of AE for our Prepress workflows? Will it process my large files faster? Is it more predictable? Will it save time and errors?
I need to be sure I am looking at the right solution.
Thanks so much in advance!

XMPIE, Design Merge Pro or Fusion Pro (no sales pitches please)

Hi,
We are looking at some indesign plugins (no standalone apps) for variable data printing. I have read that Design Merge Pro has some issues with how long it takes to rip files for printing. We normally do large quantities and that would be a concern. How many secs/page does it take to rip?
I like the interface (seems intuitive) but the RIP would be a problem.

XMPIE seems a bit pricey but how does it handle ripping files (we don't have a coder here at work...hint hint).

Fusion Pro we are still looking into.

I am not interested in sales pitches just facts please.

Looking forward to the response.

HELP...Can't duplex on a Xerox 242

$

A month ago my copier wouldn't duplex. Had a tech in and he found a small piece of plastic that was stuck in the bottom. When he removed it it worked fine. It happened again and he of course first looked to see if they was anything stuck in it again. He checked all of the connections and wiring which were fine except for one wire that he sautered. He said the only other thing it could be was the sensor. I just put it in and it still won't duplex. I have 700 36 page booklets that I have to have finished this Friday. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ricoh vs KM vs Xerox

Greetings

This is my first post here - although I've been reading the forum for advice for ages - really great platform this.

Ok, Im from South Africa, run a small copy shop that has been around for 40 years. Last five years we getting into light production.

Had a Xerox Docucolour 260 - great colour - but lots of issues with jams in finishing section. We looking at a new digital press, but are stumped on way forward.

First, I have some questions, I would greatly appreciate comments…

1) Im assuming that a straight path, larger fuser roller size and getting the machine without a finisher (Moving towards offline finishing) is the best. Am I correct?
2) Why such a big difference in Fiery controller prices between manufacturers - KM & Xerox quote $600 for embedded and Ricoh $8000 for embedded. We don't need hectic power here, but I do know I need a fiery.

Ok, so heres the machines; Ive read forums and Ricoh seems to be a favorite followed closely by KM…

1) Ricoh 5100 - $55 000
2) KM Pro 6000 - $33 000
3) Xerox Docucolour XC650 - $29 000

Ive tested the machines, the Ricoh seems by far the most robust, with lots of user maintenance available, but a very expensive stand alone or embedded Fiery option. A Fairly straight path even with a finisher.

The Xerox is basically what we have, Im assuming with small internal upgrades. Perfectly straight path without a finisher option.

The KM seems very capable but the paper path bothers me, the paper is already turning up 10 degrees as it enter the fuser unit, then another fairly sharpish bend, maybe 30 degrees as it exits… I'm very nervous about this.

Print quality on all three is fine by me - colour consistency is good - The Xerox seems to be the best as far as colour control goes - but I really don't get hung up about colour - I save each job with its colour profiles and print settings at time of print, a few quick tweaks and the next job runs fine.

Our average volume is about 30 000 / month, but Im looking at getting that unto 60 000.

I don't offer a large variety of substrates - uncoated 300gsm board and laser printer approved coated 300gsm - both in 150gsm also.

I would love to hear your comments.

Anyone seen the KM1 at IPEX?

Oohh, its the night before IPEX, yippee!!

Wondered if anyone had heard anything about the KM1? Think it sounds like a corker, price tag a bit hefty at 1.2m pound sterling, have Konica mentioned the click price, or average cost per page?

I'm off to London tomorrow to see whats new, will report back.

All the best

Tim

Uniformity of dot

$

Hi all,

Would like to know the uniformity of the dot percentage ( say 50%) over the full exposure area (of a Pano plate of size like 568mm x 695mm) of different makes of CTP, especially Agfa Polaris XTV and Agfa Advantage 3850 DL. Is there a specification from the manufacturers for this?

Is this screen dependant? Is it resolution dependant?

Thanks in advance

Regards
