Brisque 4 Error code

$

Started getting an error code 02101963 yesterday (shows up on screen during start-up and IBM E30 digital display on front of machine). Does anyone know what this is all about?

Also, have been getting the following message at start-up for some time now: "Font Downloader Not Detected". Is there an easy way to reinstall the Font downloader without doing entire system? (If the error code is related to system drive I could soon be reinstalling entire system anyway!).

Might be looking for an alternative way to drive my Dolev 800 soon.

Aerocut Static Issues

We are testing an Aerocut card cutter/creaser and we are having huge static issues. Any ideas on remedy?

Most of the build up is around the guillotine cutter. The pieces that are being cut off are hanging up around the cutter and sticking to the sheets as they pass through. So the machine sometimes messes up the cut due to the extra paper.

Ink manufactured in India

Whats the go with some of the large ink companies having their ink manufactured in India?
Is it the same quality product it once was when manufactured in Europe / Japan etc ?
Or is it manufactured in India at a cost. Equaling shit in shit out, or do they still use high quality raw materials & simply capitalise on the low cost of labor in such a country?

Hostman Steinberg is manufactured in India is it not?
Sun Chemicals apparent top of the range inks are manufactured in India

Perhaps with the price war on ink & the declining profit margins even the manufacturers in Europe / Japan / USA are reducing the quality of raw materials in their inks.

I don't know the manufacturing cost of ink but I fail to see how a company can develop, manufacture, distribute a high quality ink & sell it at a staring price of $8.50 - $9.50 Aud per Kg. With larger companies paying even less.
Perhaps a lot of ink that floods the market is manufactured on the shit in shit out principle & not just ink that's been manufactured in India/Korea etc.

What are your thoughts?

Sad to say, I'm on my way...

Well that's me done and dusted.
After thirty years in the technical side of prepress I have hit the shoals of 50+, that certain age where in the twisted mind of our captains of industry you are simply too frikking old to do your job, I have been out of work for over a year and have sent by now over 300 CV's out into the pale blue yonder, in this time I have dredged exactly five interviews.
The worst part is being told (off the record of course) that companies, red, yellow and green, major players in our beloved industry have a policy of not hiring persons over 50.
Somehow I understand though. For years the politic has been to give over 50ties all sorts of benefits, longer holidays, wage rises, better deals on the health franchises etc..
These perks have lead to the point where the over 50ties are too much trouble to employ, add to that we ancient ones are sick more often, inflexible in our ways and not in tune with todays fast pace (note dripping sarcasm) still, it's been a good run, I have had ups and downs, done stuff that would make you cry or your jaw drop on the table, been to place where they use six inch nails as circuit breakers and repaired imagesetters with a rat infestation, and I now simply just can't get a job, so I am off on a tangent, I am doing a CELTA and will see if I can make a new career as a teacher, so that's me done, washed away like tears in the rain, makes you wonder if it was all worth it.

Water pooling at the bottom of solids

$

Just drained and flushed my water tank. Put fresh and same fountain solution in and now I'm getting water pooling at the start of solids on the plate. Takes about forty sheets to somewhat settle down but even then seams unstable. You can see water everwhere. Not just washed out but swish swashes and all around.

Using 1.25oz per gallon of two step fountain solution and adding more causes lines in solids as if you had too much ink and water in the rollers.

I've checked these roller settings over and over and by the book. I'm at a loss. Never seen this before in my two decades of printing.

The water is semi filtered but not distilled by any means and has worked as recent as before it was changed.

Low dot gain & poor trap values?

$

Our presses are G7 calibrated. Our CtP plate setter is calibrated and our plates are measured on a regular basis to confirm calibration. R/O system is in place for our incoming water supply. We run Komori and Heidelberg presses, which use a different series fount from the same manufacturer. We use the same ink series from the same manufacturer on all presses. Presses are correctly packed & one of our presses uses a blanket from a different manufacturer. We have been experiencing low dot gain on all presses and poor cyan/magenta trap in blue overprints(58-62%, sometimes lower.) Our dot gains are sometimes 8-10% lower than the dot gains that we documented during our G7 calibration/verification runs. The problem can be intermittent, because at times we do not have issues, and our press-proof match is good. I have measured plates before and after runs and the plates are holding well. We have been battling these issues for almost a year and we are stumped. Since the one common denominator is the ink we use, are we safe to assume that the issue may be ink related?
Best regards,
Todd

CP2000 Database configuration

Anybody have any information on how to connect a CP2000 console to a network for ink key settings? I have a solution to get the settings to a job memory card and a database successfully, but cannot connect the CP2000 to the network to see the containing folder. Trying to avoid spending $$$$$$$ with Heidelberg for their $$$$$$$ solution.

Thanks!

White ink printing for under $5000? Go Uno?

Hi, I've been looking into white ink for transfer papers forever.
We do alot of customer heat transfers, but we outsource them for screen print transfers. the process takes time, and is starting to get to the point where customers are being lost.
I've looked into the roland, mimaki, and other brands of wide format printers that do white ink. but the price point of 20k is too high for consideration.
we do a wide variety of materials, not common in most t-shirt shops. we manufacture medical goods, and have in the recent years changed almost all of our materials to black.
We used to also do alot of dvd printing before our disk publisher broke. the ability to do hard surface items without resorting to pad printing would be a bonus.
we can usually get 20 to 40 heat transfers from an 8 1/2 X 11 print. outsourced at low volumes, dependent on color, can cost almost a dollar a transfer.
I see epson has some new tech with white solvent ink, but want to get a good ROI at a starting price under 5 grand.

Has anyone had experience with the GO UNO, OKI 920 WT?
would love to get a transfer printer that can do white ink low volume work for this price point.

Frustration picking Pantone color in InDesign "New Color Swatch" box

$

Trying to enter a Pantone number into the New Color Swatch dialog box, InDesign tries to force me to pick a different color, adding digits to my entry. Typing 451, for instance, becomes 4515. No amount of deleting that extra digit has any effect. InD just won't find my color. The swatches are also insanely organized now (as are the swatches in the Pantone books themselves), so it is almost impossible to home in on the color by scrolling through the list. Bug or a "feature." Discuss.

I am having more customers request that we do scratch off numbers on their post cards and fliers. Can anyone educate me on this material. Can it be printed on after the initial run? Does it have to be applies some other way that I could do it?

Statistical process control?

How, who, and what, would be my questions to anyone willing to share where does a company start with statistical process control in the press room? How do you keep statistics, software, manually, or other? Who is responsible, a statistical process engineer, the press room operators, prepress, the lean team? What does a company keep statistics of, incoming consumables, do you send inks to private labs for analysis, different substrates and how they react when exposed to water and ink, fount pH & conductivity, roller life, blanket life, press settings, do you measure every job printed, or just some of the jobs printed? Seems extremely daunting, but also extremely necessary. Has anybody participated in IDEAlliance's G7 Process Control Training, and was it worthwhile? What about RIT's PSA Certification, worthwhile, or not?

Todd

In Indesign CS6, the background colour of a page is white:

CS6

in CC, its a grey colour at its lightest setting:

CC

I dont see any options for further adjustments, am I stuck with the grey colour or is it hidden elsewhere where I can adjust that to be like CS6?
