(Major) Illustrator CC Issues

$

Hi all,

Just finished installing Illustrator CC onto an Intel MacPro with 10GB of memory, SSD drive, and Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Something as simple as moving a box takes approximately 20 seconds or longer to complete once I let go of the mouse (sometimes it won't show the change unless I click elsewhere on the page). Another issue just discovered is that Illustrator CC won't quit. I have to force close it.

I've rebooted, repaired disk permissions and the like and so far no luck. Certainly, this can't be right. Anyone have any ideas?

TIA,

Xante Impressia opinions

Hello all,

I've been in the printing business for 10 years and am in the process of going out on my own. My volume isn't yet large enough to justify a storefront and higher-end equipment. So I'm starting in my house for now. Currently I'm running a Docucolor, which is off-service, and is starting to give me all kinds of trouble. As I've now learned, Xerox's off-plan service rates are absurd and it's next to impossible to find a non-Xerox tech to work on them.

Anyway, I've been looking at the Xante Impressia as well as some of the lower-cost used copiers from Canon & Konica (need to keep it under 10k if possible). My original plan was to get the Impressia as a 'bridge' of sorts until I get my volume up and can afford something else. But that plan quickly went out the window when I learned how much the cost of high-coverage prints ran (I knew it sounded to good to be true). I'd have to drastically raise my pricing on my current customers/jobs or just not make any money. And neither of those options sound very appealing.

However, I'm still interested in one. Just not as my main production machine. But in my research, it seems the vast majority of opinions on Xante are negative. Granted, a lot of the stuff I'm reading is years old at this point. But it's still concerning. A bad decision at this stage could potentially be the difference in my success or failure. So I was just wondering if anyone here had an Impressia (or even an Ilumina) and could answer a few questions for me.

1) How do you now feel about your purchase? Great? Regret it? Take it or leave it?
2) What kind of stocks have you successfully ran through it without a lot of trouble?
3) What type of jobs do you find yourself running on it mostly?
4) Do you find the consumables regularly reach the end of their life cycle (or at least come close)? Or are you frequently replacing parts with 20,30,40% left on them?
5) How does the color hold from sheet to sheet as well as from one end of the sheet to the other? I had some 12-up business card samples run and noticed that one side of the sheet was darker than the other. Not sure if the machine just needed calibrating or it is just a common thing.
6) How is registration?

Also, if anyone had any suggestions on a sub 10k used copier brand/model I should be looking at I'd appreciate it. I need it to be able to run cover stock at least up to 100# (preferably 110), gloss label, and digital vinyl window sticker stock.

Thanks in advance for any input/opinions!

Sudden Highwater Error with Agfa SelectSet 5000

Hey everyone,

I really need some help here. I have a Highwater RIP running an Agfa SelectSet 5000. I've had it running for years with minimal issues, and suddenly today the RIP would not turn on. After jiggling some connections, something finally worked and it turned on. However, once it loaded the RIP software, it tells me it sees an "Unknown Output Device" when loading my page setups that I have not touched since it was installed.

The completed que is completely empty when the output monitor loads as well.

I have no idea what to do, as I wasn't trained in this area of the software when it was installed. I was told I'd probably never have to bother with it unless we get a new image setter and that at the time that happens whoever is doing the install could take care of setting up the output profile.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Been hearing a lot of good things about XMF, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a huge user base. Would especially like to hear from some coverts. Lack of faith in Kodak and Preps seems to to be the major driving point for us. Lets hear it, fellas. Don't hold back.

U.S. oddness

Just returned home from a few days in the States. Had a great time - but there were (from a Canadians point of view) some oddities.
Credit and debit cards in Canada have a built-in security chip. Oddly, despite the fact that the credit companies are US based, and that the banks are international - US retailers had no idea how to use these cards.
So,
A bookstore processed my debit card as a credit card. Bizarre.
Using my debit card I couldn't select which account (savings or chequing) that funds would be deducted from. The cashiers did not understand that this could be done or that not being able to select the account was a problem.
Some shops still manually franked my credit card (the way they did back in the 80s).
And at the self serve gas station, the pumps asked for my 5 digit zip code when I used my credit card. But being a Canadian, I don't have a 5 digit zip code. Despite the fact that Canadians represent the greatest percentage of visitors to the US. You'd think that the International gas stations and International credit card companies would have programmed the pumps to accept credit card verification beyond just the US zip code.

So primitive.

Image fading at lead edge of plate - DPM34HSC

Hi all.

I've been running plates on this processor (DPM34HSC) for quite a while with no issues. Suddenly, yesterday, when I ran plates, I notice it was cutting off, actually fading off, the top type/image that's closest to the gripper. I'm using ABDick PrintersRIP, poly plates, 13,375" in length.

I can move down my artwork by 3/16" on the Mac and resend the file and it's fine, but if I butt it up to the gripper edge, like I've always done, and anything is within that top 3/16" area, it fades off.

Any ideas?

Thanks

photo-chromatic ink

This was an actual request today from a marketing agency:

We want a mailer that will appear blank until taken out of the envelope.
We want the ink to then start slowly appearing once the mailer is out of the envelope.
We were thinking of using photo-chromatic inks in different colours.

We thought about this for a bit.
Did they mean that we print photo-chromatic inks in the dark?
Guillotine in the dark?
And finally insert the mailers into envelopes in the dark?

After falling about with laughter we considered what our response should be?

Answers on a post please. . .

New Prepress Workflow Recommendations

We’re small sheet-fed printer/manufacturer of holding cartons. The largest sheet size we print on is a 28in x 40in. Our current CtP is a Fujifilm Javelin 8300 E, so a new workflow must be able to support that device.

We currently are using Rampage v10 as our Prepress Workflow and plan on getting it upgraded to v12 or we might get a new workflow altogether. We’re using Adobe CS6 to help preflight artwork files before ripping the artwork in Rampage. We currently looking Xitron Navigator Elite and Xitron Sierra to possible replace Rampage instead . I’m trying to find the cheapest workflow/RIP option out there since we’re just outputting to one device.

If anyone has any experience with Rampage, Navigator, Sierra or a different workflow that might work for us, I would love to hear your input. Thanks in advance!

(I should also mention all the work stations use Windows 7 Professional 64-bit except for our Rampage interface which runs on a Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. It’s my understanding that we’ll have to buy a new Mac for the v12-v13 Rampage interface but I would prefer our new workflow interface to run on a windows machine since it will have a better compatibility with our other workstations.)

What do you think of the new "Adobe Cloud?"

Yup. I went there. ;)

This is a topic that we have been kicking around our prepress department for a couple months now. And as we get closer to the official "Launch" of this, I was wondering what the rest of you really think about this.

From an independent designer with one computer stand point, I can see where it would be a benefit. It is cheaper than upgrades every year to stay on top of the technology, and allows you to always be cutting edge. That's great for them. They're the ones who are going to kill me on this, because they are going to stay "up-to-date" and force me to follow.

From a prepress manager's stand point where I have 4 macs in my main department and a total of 10 in my other stores, I'm not even sure how to approach the owner with the upcoming costs of this insanity! We stay on top of the current versions, but be upgrade as necessary. We might upgrade just one to the latest version to handle those "cutting edge" designers and customers that always have to have the latest and greatest, but generally, the majority of them get upgraded as needed when the latest version becomes main stream. Usually almost 2 years, and not uncommon for some of them to skip an upgrade depending on how close they come out and are picked up. And, what's worse, from what I gather Adobe currently has NO intention of offering volume licensing support anymore.

So, what do you think? What size shop are you from, or are you a designer or a software programer? How do you think this will affect your production? Or, do you just want to vent about the stupidity of it all?

What would you answer?

I just wanted to check on this whether the print will bleed to the edge?
I have attached the report and noticed that the only pages that really need bleed would be the covers, and we don’t have this document with bleed and crop marks.
Would it reduce the cost if it doesn’t bleed to the edge?

Is there a bit of kit to help with this process?.....

We Have a gluing machine, we run sheets through the gluer and it applies an even coating of glue to the back of board.

we are putting attaching the glued board to a sheet and then attaching another glued board to the other side of the middle sheet, to give us a 'sandwich'.

Is there a bit of kit out there to make the process of getting the glued sheet onto the middle sheet easier?

Thought someone may have been doing something similar.

Thanks in advance.

General Advice for young printshop

$

Hey everyone, I hope this is posted in an acceptable place. I wasn't sure exactly where to put it.

So I'm in a worker owner in an almost two year old printshop. We are a worker owned shop, and to be honest, I didn't know anything about printing when I got involved in the project. I was fresh in nyc for occupy wall street, and we were discussing starting worker owned businesses. We chose printing. Since then, I've fallen in love with the work. From learning to use an abdick 360 with nothing but the operators manual (lots of long nights and wasted paper) to constantly dealing with pos copiers, it's been a long and thankless startup phase.

We started with virtually no capital or equipment. We have been putting all our money into the shop this whole time, living off of part time night jobs on the side, which aint easy in new york city unless you're living on your parents dime, which we aint. One of us has a kid to feed, and we really need some advice to make it over what feels like the last hump before we are making a wage off this thing.

We have a bizhub pro c5501, and abdick 360 with a crestline watering system and surefoot sucker feet, a ryobi (forgot the number, I don't work on this press at all yet, it's a two color press from the late 80's or early 90's I think) an old champion hydraulic cutter, a collator, a martin yale 959 table top folder, a manual die press and some button machines.

Onto the questions:

How the hell do you set your prices? We try to be competitive, but we can't pay ourselves yet, and don't really know how to go about setting prices that work for us and are competitive. There is a guy about a half mile away that does 5000 b&w copies for $90. How the hell does he do that?

How should we go about getting new customers? We have a pretty consistent customer base, and it's slowly growing, but we really need to double our current volume, if not triple it. We mostly do postcards and business cards for other businesses and nonprofits, some booklet jobs, a rare wedding invite here or there. I'm wondering if you have any advice on a piece of the market we might be missing out on, or any advice in general about marketing. We currently plan on using the fact that we are a union worker owned print shop to try to get some business from unions and non profits in nyc by calling them up and telling them what we do, followed with a mailer, followed with a follow up call.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, and if you know anyone in NYC who would be interested in working with us, don't hesitate to send em my way. Thanks.

Nexus 8.? question - basic (I hope)

$

I have a customer with a Nexus 8.6(?) workflow, and we're working to try to get it to output pre-separated, un-screened, high-res PostScript or PDF files for us to feed into another system. We're having some difficulties setting up a workflow to do this, and I think it's some pretty basic stuff. If anyone can help, it would be appreciated!

1) I can't seem to find a user manual online... any links?

2) We can't figure out how to set up the "Merge OPPO" and "Make Separations" modules in the workflow correctly... we keep getting "no files to merge" error, so we're obviously using it incorrectly or missing a step before these modules.

3) We're trying to stack the Merge OPPO module with "Interpret PS" and "Convert EPS to PS" modules, but the examples show a line returning back up to the main workflow stream after those modules... we can't get it to do that (sorry, it's hard to describe!).

If anyone is an expert on this subject and can solve the problems, I'm also willing to hire them via Webex/TeamViewer to set it up. I'm told that Esko doesn't support this version any more, and we're not likely to get them to fix it... if that's untrue, I can go that route too.

Thanks!
Kevin.

DPM 2340 font issues

I am trying to find a way around having to outline fonts before I send files to the Harequlin rip on our 2340. our current workflow is to create files in IND (text, images and placing PDF files) into a doc, export to a PDF, using pitstop outline fonts in the exported PDF then print the exported PDF to the RIP. I would love to skip the step of exporting to another file just to outline fonts that may be in the placed PDF files. Do I just not have a setting right in my rip that it errors if I don't outline the fonts? we are running win 7 and cs6. the rip is ps3 compitable

any ideas
